A recycled-content percentage needs context. Identify whether it applies to a material, component or whole product, which basis was used, and the declaration that supports it.
01. Identify what is being measured
Record whether the statement applies to a material, component, package or whole product. Do not turn a component claim into a whole-product claim without support.
02. Preserve the stated definitions
Capture the reported total and any stated pre-consumer or post-consumer breakdown. Retain the measurement basis and calculation method where supplied. Do not infer information that is missing.
03. Check applicability and conflicts
Match the statement to the product and relevant period or batch. When declarations conflict, keep both versions instead of averaging them.
04. Request the missing context
Identify the exact product, conflict or missing basis in the follow-up. Request a corrected statement that actually resolves the problem.
One declaration reports 38% recycled content and another reports 42% for the same housing material and period. Keep the conflict visible and ask which applies. Do not publish 40% as a compromise.
